Yuletide Recs 2024
(Note: links fixed now!)
I totally won Yuletide this year, y’all! I am the lucky recipient of 2 glorious Kyoshi Novels fics, both of which I adore and wholeheartedly recommend.
The Kyoshi Novels - F. C. Yee (prequels to Avatar: The Last Airbender)
touching this world only lightly. (G, 2k). An absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking character study of Jesa that follows her from child to air bender to bandit queen.
The Flying Opera Company Presents: The Moon Flower Village. (G, 1k) A theatre performance used as cover for a heist, but everything goes horribly awry! Hilarious and brilliant outsider POV narration by a theatre reviewer who has no idea what’s going on. No canon knowledge required!
Some of the other stories I’ve loved this year include:
Charmed (1998 TV Series)
Prue Diligence (G, 1.5k) A pitch-perfect story of ghost!Prue coming back to help her family.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Welcome to New York (It’s Been Waiting for You). (T, 2k) A glorious canon-divergent AU in which Rebecca runs into Greg in New York instead of Josh.
Derkholm Series - Diana Wynne Jones
Part of the Furniture. (G, 15k). A hilarious, pitch-perfect sequel to Year of the Griffin, in which Blade, Claudia, and Elda must confront an extremely rude gargoyle, magical plagiarism, and a lost soul.
Dublin Murder Squad Series
Perhaps the Heart Is Constant After All (T, 3k) An adorable story about Antoinette finally getting some of the happiness she deserves.
Emelan - Tamora Pierce
A Selection of Letters from the Desk of Duchess Sandrilene fa Toren. (G, 2k) The epistolary Sandry Does Politics fic I never knew I needed!
Howl’s Moving Castle
Sophie Hatter and the Infinite Bag (G, 5k). Howl attempts to teach Sophie formal magic, Sophie attempts to make Michael a birthday present, hijinks ensues!
In Other Lands - Sarah Rees Brennan
The Prince and the Wizard. (T, 2k) Elliot and Luke write a fairy tale together, complete with snarky marginalia!
The Kairos (O’Keefe) Series - Madeleine L’Engle
known now in part, to be known in full. (G, 7k) A glorious sequel story for Meg, exploring her Might-Have-Beens with generosity, wit, and so much tenderness.
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke
The Crystal Cave. (G, 1.5k). A beautiful fix-it in which James Ritter finally gets to make some choices for himself.
The Queen’s Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
a better fate than wisdom. (G, 2k) A pitch-perfect canon expansion in the form of Sophos’s letters to Helen between the events of The Thief and Conspiracy of Kings.
someone will remember us (G, 1k) A brilliant intertextual pastiche of the ways Eugenides and Irene are remembered throughout literature and history.
Questionable Content
This New Day. (T, 6.5k) A funny, sweet story about Winslow expanding his social horizons and reconnecting with Pintsize.
Song of the Lioness - Tamora Pierce
Lioness Rampant and Tower Sable. (T, 3.5k) A glorious canon-divergent fixit for Thom and Alanna’s relationship.
and sympathy. (G, 3.5k) A fascinating look at Cythera of Naxen.
