Yuletide Recs 2021
Once again, I have been blown away by the generosity and talent of my Yuletide writers! I was the lucky recipient of two incredible stories, one each for Archivist Wasp and Bright Smoke, Cold Fire.
Archivist Wasp Series - Nicole Kornher-Stace
The Ghostgrass and the Harvest-Knife (T, 2.2k)
A haunting, beautiful, bittersweet Wasp-centric story that bridges the gap between Archivist Wasp and Latchkey. Graceful and heartbreaking and hopeful, in exactly the same way that the books are!
Bright Smoke Cold Fire Duology - Rosamund Hodge
Library Fines (T, 1.2k)
A funny, sweet, devastating exploration of Runajo and Juliet's relationship through another foray into the library! Technically a canon-divergence AU, but it so perfectly matches the tone of canon and fills out some missing beats in Juliet and Runajo's relationship that it feels more like a missing scene from the original. Guaranteed to provide ALL THE FEELS.
Other stories I've loved this year:
The Baby-Sitters Club (TV 2020)
The Watcher and the Dancer (T, 2.5k)
A sweet, hilarious, pitch-perfect story of Claudia bonding with Janine in the wake of Mimi's death, complete with some adorable Janine/Ashley romance!
The Burning Kingdoms - Tasha Suri
Nāmagraha (G, 2k)
A gorgeous, poignant worldbuilding fic that explores the mythology and religious traditions of the Kingdom of Alor. You don't need to know canon to enjoy this one, but if you're familiar with the canon, you definitely shouldn't miss it.
Emperor's New Groove (2000) & Hamlet - Shakespeare
Denmark's New Groove (G, 1.4k)
Lots of people have rec'd this, but it's so good that I couldn't leave it off. A hilarious mash-up of Hamlet and the Emperor's New Groove.
The Hilary Tamar Mysteries - Sarah Caudwell
wisdom like this (2.2k)
The group calls Julia on all of her queer subtext, with perfectly in-character narration by Hilary Tamar.
We Are Lady Parts (TV)
Firestarter (T, 2.9k)
A completely lovely Amina/Saira getting together fic by way of a tattoo shop narrated by a pitch-perfect Amina.
No Pleasure Cruise (T, 9.3k)
The epic tale of We Are Lady Parts first-ever tour! Featuring whole-band bonding, an accidental performance for a mosque youth group, and a delightful slow-burn Amina/Saira romance.
